Dr. Daniel Jackson Appreciation Month

Pierre Bernard's Appearance
on Stargate: SG-1

By GateAngel

Pierre Bernard is the show's graphic designer and has a regular segment on Late Night with Conan O'Brien called "Recliner of Rage." During a recent one of these 'rages' he discussed his anger about problems in world events and equated them to what he sees is the problem in his favorite show Stargate SG-1 and how it is WAY better without Dr. Daniel Jackson because he seems to get in the way of the military action and is constantly insisting on moral behavior. Soon after this segment aired, Pierre was contacted by the producers of Stargate:SG-1 and invited up to the set in Vancouver to have a small guest spot on an upcoming episode A filming crew from The Conan O'Brien show was sent along with Pierre to document the events.

Pierre Bernard left the New York airport and arrived at the Vancouver airport. From there it was off to the set of Stargate SG-1 where he was met by one of the production assistants.

PA: "Welcome to Stargate: SG-1"

PB: "I can't wait to get started."

Pierre is then shown to his own trailer where the legend 'Technician #2' has been placed on the door. Pierre spends sometime being awed by all the amenities inside the trailer and amazed how it has a TV set just like the one he has at home.

From there he and the PA move into the interior of The Bridges Studio where Pierre is introduced to Executive Producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper. Both them are a little unsure of Pierre's skit content.

BW: So this is not a joke?"

PB: No, no not a joke at all, the bit I did on Conan came from my heart cause I am into the show," he assures them.

Satisfied at Pierre's seeming honesty at being a fan, the next place they take him is to the gate room where Pierre is allowed to stand on the ramp right under the Stargate. His excitement at this is genuine and he does the usual fannish display of happiness and a few over zealous expletives have to be bleeped out. Next up, Wright and Cooper allow Pierre access to the set of the new series Stargate: Atlantis.

BW&RCC: "This is the Atlantis, the Lost City."

PB: The Lost City, they actually find it, is there a villain?" (at this point the film is obviously edited to cut out something). "A new Goa'uld?"

BW&RCC: "No not a Goa'uld."

After this, Pierre is allowed to act out a fantasy of flying one of the new style cargo ships that have been created for Atlantis. Interspersed is clips from scenes were cargo ships are used in the show.

Pierre leaves Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper to go back to his trailer where he meets up with Amanda Tapping who is in costume as Sam Carter dressed in Class-A blouse and skirt.

AT: "Hi, welcome to our show (Amanda Tapping shakes his hand, gives him a brief hug, then steps back away from him a bit).

PB: Nice meeting you."

AT: " Nice to meet you too, I'm a huge fan of your segment."

PB: Thank you, and I'm a huge fan of yours."

At this point the film is again obviously edited to cut out something and the next thing we see is Pierre giving Amanda a gift, which is some sort of magazine, which she glances through. "I hope you enjoy that."

AT: "I will. Nice meeting you … well, we'll be seeing you again later and hanging out," she walks away with some of the set people who are with her.

After Amanda Tapping is gone, Pierre talks about how he used to think that meeting Halle Berry was the high point of his life, but now this is the high point, though it isn't clear whether he means meeting Amanda specifically or the whole set experience over all. The scene is then quickly cut to a point where Pierre is being introduced to Richard Dean Anderson. Pierre is obviously in awe of this. RDA is obviously in costume for filming a scene in the episode and is wearing blue BDUs.

PB: "It's so cool to meet you."

RDA: "It's an honor meeting you, there's free food over there if you need it."

Pierre leaves to go back to his trailer once more to get into his costume for his role as Sgt. O'Brien who will be, for this instance, in the control room in place of Sgt. Walter Davis (played by Gary Jones). He is then taken to the sound stage to rehearse for his part.

The PA leads him to the set where a director's chair with his name on it has been added to the line of chairs with other actor's names on them. He sits down in his own chair with a big grin on his face. The film is obviously edited and suddenly RDA now dressed for another scene requiring him to be in his green BDUs is seated next to Pierre and RDA is continuing on in his fixation about the free food on the set.

RDA: "Did you try the nuts?  The cookies are usually homemade."

PR: "Yes the food is really good."

RDA: "Did you try the tuna fish, it's really good."

PB: "I tried it, the food is really good," he responds to RDA's questions, but it seems like RDA wasn't really listening to the responses or he was actually talking to someone off camera sitting next to Pierre, because he makes a face and remarks “Oh you didn't like it," as if Pierre didn't say that he did.

Now Pierre is called to set to rehearse his line which is 'We have audio contact, sir. It's Colonel Carter.' RDA is in the scene with him and has switched to a costume consisting of civilian clothing as if he is just arriving at the base in the middle of an emergency. In take one, Pierre delivers his line very deadpan and flat. In take two he flubs the line. After that the director comes and talks to him, telling him to punch it up a bit and then along comes RDA.

RDA: (to the director) "Did you just tell him too much." (to Pierre) don't change a thing."

On the 3rd take Pierre gets it right and is met by cheering from the production people. The words:

flash on the screen then we are returned to the set of the Conan O'Brien show where Pierre comes out in his Sgt. O'Brien costume and he sets up the clip of 'the world premiere of his spot on Stargate: SG-1'. This is followed by the clip, to the best of my knowledge, from the 8th season episode “New Order.”

Return back to the Conan set, and Conan remarks on Pierre's performance and how he was 'in the moment', then asks if he might make a return appearance on the show. Pierre tells him they did film one other thing for another episode (which is most likely their idea of joke and has no bearing on any real episode).

Pierre as Sgt. O'Brien is walking down a corridor at the SGC on his own. He sees someone off camera, pauses and says questioningly "Dr. Jackson?" At which point, a weapon is supposedly fired at him off camera by 'Dr. Jackson' and we see squibs going off in Pierre's clothes to simulate him being shot and then he falls to the floor dead. Then the screen fades into a black background with the words "Robert C. Cooper Executive Producer” on it. Conan surmises that Pierre's character will not be back after that. Conan then tells him that: "Sgt. O'Brien is a credit to the Irish people".

The following are screen caps from the clip of the episode that Pierre was in.
